Abstract : This research is an attempt to make a correlation between job design and the shape of the organizational hierarchy. As a result of the method which is being adopted in designing jobs, two major hierarchies may result: Tall organizational structures and Flat organizational structures. Tall structures are those that can bc classified as having more organizational levels and narrow span of control. These types of structures are suitable for technical, simple nature jobs. Flat structures are those which can be characterized as having less organizational levels with wide span of control. These structures are suitable for diversified, more complex jobs. In addition to the effect of job design on organizational hierarchy, many other factors have also been introduced. These include size, technology, and organizational culture, which are proved to have an effect on shaping the organizational hierarchy.
